Aamir Khan has long expressed his desire to adapt the Indian epic Mahabharat for the big screen. In a conversation with entrepreneur Raj Shamani, Khan shared that after the release of his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par on June 20, 2025, he plans to commence work on Mahabharat. He emphasized the project’s depth, stating, “It’s layered, it has emotion, it has scale—everything you find in the world, you will find in Mahabharat.”
A Potential Farewell to Cinema
Khan’s remarks suggest that Mahabharat could serve as the capstone to his illustrious career. He reflected, “Maybe after doing this, I will feel that I have nothing left to do. I cannot do anything after this, as the material of this film is going to be like that.”
An Epic on an Epic Scale
Recognizing the complexity of Mahabharat, Khan envisions the adaptation as a multi-part film series, potentially requiring multiple directors. He drew parallels to the production approach of The Lord of the Rings, suggesting simultaneous shooting of different parts to manage the extensive narrative.
Casting Considerations
While Khan will produce the series, he remains undecided about taking on an acting role. He has expressed admiration for the character of Lord Krishna and has hinted at the possibility of portraying him, stating, “I’m trying my best.”
Upcoming Release: Sitaare Zameen Par
Before embarking on Mahabharat, Khan will be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual successor to his 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. Directed by R.S. Prasanna, this sports comedy-drama features Khan as a basketball coach and is set to release on June 20, 2025.
