KKN Gurugram Desk | On Friday, Indian oil marketing companies released updated retail petrol and diesel prices across various cities in India. The change comes after fluctuations in the global crude oil market, leading to increased prices in some states. While major cities like Delhi and Mumbai have not seen any price changes, other regions, including Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar, have experienced hikes in fuel prices.

Global Market Trends Affecting Fuel Prices

The recent dip in global crude oil prices has impacted the Indian retail market. Despite a slight decline in global crude oil prices, Indian cities are seeing price hikes in petrol and diesel. The global crude oil price has surged over the past 24 hours, with Brent Crude hitting $74.04 per barrel and WTI (West Texas Intermediate) reaching $70.09 per barrel. This increase in crude oil prices is reflected in the local retail prices of petrol and diesel in certain regions of India.

Oil prices are usually affected by multiple factors in the international market, including geopolitical tensions, demand fluctuations, and production cuts by major oil-producing countries. When crude prices rise, it directly influences the cost of refined fuels like petrol and diesel. For consumers, this means an increase in the cost of daily commute and other transportation needs.

Petrol and Diesel Prices in Key Indian Cities

On Friday, February 27, 2025, the following petrol and diesel prices were observed across major Indian cities:

  • Delhi: Petrol is priced at ₹94.72 per litre, while diesel stands at ₹87.62 per litre. Despite the increase in global crude prices, Delhi has not seen any changes in the retail price of fuel for the day.

  • Mumbai: In Mumbai, petrol prices remain high at ₹103.44 per litre, while diesel is priced at ₹89.97 per litre. Mumbai continues to witness relatively higher fuel prices, primarily due to transportation costs and taxes.

  • Chennai: In Chennai, petrol is priced at ₹100.76 per litre, and diesel costs ₹92.35 per litre. While Chennai’s petrol price is comparatively lower than Mumbai, it still reflects the overall trend of rising fuel prices in India.

  • Kolkata: Petrol prices in Kolkata are ₹104.95 per litre, and diesel is ₹91.76 per litre. Kolkata has the highest petrol price among the major metropolitan cities, reflecting both local taxes and global price movements.

Regional Price Fluctuations in Other States

While the fuel prices in the major metros remained stable, several other regions have seen price increases.

  • Uttar Pradesh (UP): In the Gautam Buddh Nagar district of UP, petrol has increased by 16 paise, reaching ₹94.87 per litre. Diesel also saw a hike of 20 paise, now priced at ₹88.01 per litre. However, in the capital city of Lucknow, petrol prices dropped by 6 paise, bringing it down to ₹94.73 per litre, while diesel reduced by 6 paise to ₹87.86 per litre.

  • Bihar: In the capital city of Patna, petrol saw a rise of 7 paise, reaching ₹105.60 per litre. Diesel also went up by 6 paise, costing ₹92.43 per litre. As seen in other states, the increase in prices can be attributed to the rise in global crude oil prices and the specific tax structure in each state.

Impact of Global Oil Prices on Local Economy

The fluctuation in fuel prices has a direct impact on the cost of living for consumers across India. A hike in petrol and diesel prices leads to an increase in transportation costs, which in turn affects the prices of goods and services. Since India imports most of its crude oil, the country is highly susceptible to changes in global oil prices. Even a slight increase in crude prices can result in a significant jump in retail fuel costs.

Moreover, the demand for petroleum products also plays a crucial role in determining the prices. As India’s economy recovers post-pandemic, the demand for fuel has surged, further pushing the prices higher. The government’s decision to maintain high taxes on fuel adds another layer to the price structure, making it more expensive for consumers.

How Often Are Petrol and Diesel Prices Updated?

The retail prices of petrol and diesel in India are updated every morning at 6 AM by the state-owned oil companies like Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL). The prices are subject to fluctuations based on changes in global oil prices, foreign exchange rates, and local taxes. Consumers are advised to check the fuel prices regularly to stay informed about any potential changes.

Factors Affecting the Retail Prices of Petrol and Diesel

  1. Crude Oil Prices: The price of crude oil is one of the most significant factors influencing petrol and diesel prices. A rise in crude prices directly leads to an increase in fuel prices.

  2. Exchange Rate: India imports most of its crude oil, and therefore, the fluctuation in the value of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar also affects fuel prices.

  3. Taxes: The central and state governments impose taxes on petrol and diesel, which significantly impact the final retail price. States like Maharashtra, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu have higher taxes, leading to higher fuel prices.

  4. Transportation and Refining Costs: The cost of refining crude oil and transporting it across the country also influences fuel prices. In addition, the supply chain logistics and storage facilities can affect the final cost of petrol and diesel.

  5. Demand and Supply: The demand for fuel during certain periods, such as festivals, travel seasons, or economic recovery, can lead to price fluctuations. Similarly, supply disruptions due to natural disasters or geopolitical factors can also impact the prices.

How to Save on Fuel Costs?

With rising fuel prices, it becomes essential for consumers to adopt strategies to save on petrol and diesel costs. Here are a few tips:

  1. Drive Efficiently: Avoid rapid acceleration and heavy braking, which can lead to more fuel consumption. Maintaining a steady speed and proper tire pressure can increase fuel efficiency.

  2. Use Public Transport: Instead of driving your personal vehicle, consider using public transportation, which is more economical and environmentally friendly.

  3. Carpooling: Sharing rides with others can help you save on fuel costs, especially during daily commutes.

  4. Regular Vehicle Maintenance: Keeping your vehicle well-maintained, including oil changes and regular servicing, ensures better fuel efficiency.

  5. Plan Your Trips: Combine errands and plan your trips to avoid unnecessary driving, thus saving on fuel consumption.

In conclusion, while petrol and diesel prices have seen an uptick in some regions due to the rise in global crude oil prices, major cities like Delhi and Mumbai have seen stability in their prices. As global crude prices continue to fluctuate, Indian consumers may witness further price changes in the coming weeks. The price of fuel plays a critical role in the cost of living, making it essential for consumers to stay informed about daily price updates.

As the global oil market continues to evolve, it is crucial for both consumers and businesses to find ways to cope with rising fuel prices. Whether through adopting energy-efficient practices or exploring alternative energy sources, finding solutions to deal with high fuel prices will remain a key concern for the Indian economy.
