KKN Gurugram Desk | After days of scorching heat, Bihar witnessed a sudden change in weather with thunderstorms and showers offering much-needed relief to the people. Following Sunday’s rainfall, multiple districts are once again expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms today.

The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert warning for several areas, indicating potential danger due to intense weather activity.

Bihar Weather Today: Key Highlights

  • Relief showers after intense heat, but new warnings issued.

  • Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 36.5°C after a significant drop.

  • Dehri was the hottest in Bihar, recording 41.8°C.

  • Several districts under Orange Alert for rain, hailstorm, and thunderstorm.

How Bihar’s Weather Turned After Sunday Rain

On Sunday, people across most parts of Bihar, including the capital Patna, faced severe heat conditions during the day. However, the arrival of dense clouds and a sudden thunderstorm, accompanied by light to moderate rain, transformed the atmosphere dramatically.

The rain showers not only cooled the environment but also brought down temperatures significantly, providing much-needed respite to the residents.

Major Temperature Drop in Patna and Other Cities

According to the latest reports, Patna saw a remarkable fall of 7 degrees Celsius in its maximum temperature within 24 hours. The maximum temperature recorded on Sunday stood at 36.5°C, compared to earlier days where it hovered around 43°C.

While Patna enjoyed the cooler climate, Dehri emerged as the hottest place in the state with the temperature soaring to 41.8°C.

Bihar Meteorological Centre Issues Orange Alert

The Meteorological Centre, Patna, has provided detailed insights into the prevailing weather situation. A low-pressure trough has formed, extending from the central parts of Uttar Pradesh through Bihar to northern Bangladesh. In addition, a cyclonic circulation is active over central Assam and adjoining regions.

Because of these developments, the weather conditions across Bihar are expected to remain unstable for the next three days, with possibilities of:

  • Heavy rainfall

  • Thunderstorms

  • Lightning strikes

  • Hailstorms

  • Strong surface winds (up to 50-60 km/h)

An Orange Alert has been officially issued for many districts, urging residents to remain cautious.

Districts Under Orange Alert for Severe Weather

The following districts have been placed under an Orange Alert due to forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms:

  • East Champaran

  • West Champaran

  • Gopalganj

  • Siwan

  • Saran

  • Vaishali

  • Samastipur

  • Muzaffarpur

  • Sitamarhi

  • Sheohar

  • Madhubani

  • Darbhanga

  • Madhepura

  • Saharsa

  • Supaul

  • Araria

  • Kishanganj

  • Purnia

  • Katihar

In these districts, strong winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h are expected, along with heavy rainfall, thunder, and lightning. People have been advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather episodes.

Yellow Alert Issued for Other Districts Including Patna

While Orange Alert areas face the highest risk, the rest of Bihar, including Patna, is under a Yellow Alert. These areas are expected to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms but with relatively lower intensity compared to Orange Alert zones.

Nonetheless, residents have been strongly advised to seek shelter during thunderstorms and not venture into open spaces, particularly during lightning strikes.

Rainfall Records: Kishanganj Reports Significant Showers

Over the past 24 hours, Kishanganj experienced notable rainfall, with Thakurganj receiving 14.6 mm and the main Kishanganj area recording 5.5 mm of rain.

Meanwhile, Patna registered 4.6 mm rainfall, offering considerable relief from the sweltering conditions. Arwal, however, reported minimal rainfall at 0.5 mm.

Due to these showers, the maximum temperatures in most districts have seen a substantial decline, bringing temporary relief from the oppressive heat.

Temperature Summary: Major Cities in Bihar

Here’s a look at the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in key cities of Bihar:

City Maximum Temperature (°C) Minimum Temperature (°C)
Patna 36.5 28.1
Gaya 40.0 27.0
Bhagalpur 34.3 26.0
Muzaffarpur 33.8 27.2

Impact of Current Weather Conditions on Daily Life

The sudden change in weather has had a mixed impact on daily life:

  • Positive Effects:

    • Significant relief from heatwave conditions.

    • Improved air quality with lower temperatures.

    • Reduced electricity consumption due to lower AC and cooler usage.

  • Negative Effects:

    • Potential waterlogging in low-lying areas.

    • Power outages reported in some districts during thunderstorms.

    • Traffic disruptions due to water-logged roads and fallen trees.

Residents have been asked to stay alert and keep emergency kits ready in case of extreme weather events.

Advisory Issued by Disaster Management Authorities

The Bihar Disaster Management Department has issued a set of important safety instructions:

  • Avoid stepping outdoors during thunderstorms.

  • Stay away from trees, electric poles, and open fields during lightning.

  • Secure loose objects in balconies and rooftops.

  • Farmers are advised to protect their crops, particularly sensitive crops prone to hail damage.

  • Local administrations have been directed to ensure readiness for any emergency rescue operations.

Future Forecast: What to Expect Over the Next 3 Days

The Meteorological Department has predicted that unstable weather conditions will persist for the next three days. Here’s a brief forecast:

  • Day 1: Moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, particularly in Orange Alert districts.

  • Day 2: Rainfall expected to reduce slightly but isolated heavy showers likely.

  • Day 3: Scattered showers, possible lightning in northern and eastern Bihar.

After this period, weather is expected to stabilize slightly, but temperatures will likely remain moderate, sparing the state from the previous heatwave.

Bihar’s weather has entered a highly volatile phase, where the shift from oppressive heat to stormy rains poses its own challenges. The issuance of Orange and Yellow Alerts across multiple districts signifies the seriousness of the situation.
