KKN Gurugram Desk | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory for Bihar, warning of thunderstorms and strong winds in nine districts of the state. With parts of the state recording temperatures above 40°C and unstable atmospheric conditions, Bihar is likely to witness fluctuating weather patterns over the next 48 hours.

The warning comes as the pre-monsoon period continues to bring heat, humidity, and intermittent rainfall across the region.

IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert in Nine Districts

According to the latest IMD bulletin, Western Champaran, Eastern Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, and Purnia are likely to witness isolated thunderstorms and strong surface winds on Monday. These weather conditions may include lightning, gusty winds, and light showers at a few locations.

Key Alerts:

  • Thunderstorm with lightning likely in isolated areas

  • Surface wind speed may exceed 40-50 km/h in affected zones

  • Damage potential includes minor disruption in power supply and weak infrastructure

The Meteorological Department has advised residents, particularly farmers and construction workers, to take precautions and avoid outdoor activities during high-risk hours.

Rainfall Observed in Several Districts Including Patna

On Sunday, light to moderate rainfall was reported in Patna and five other districts, providing temporary relief from the scorching summer heat. Despite the rainfall, temperatures remained on the higher side in several locations, including Patna, Buxar, and Bhojpur.

City-Wise Rainfall Snapshot (June 1, 2025):

City Rainfall (mm) Max Temp (°C) Min Temp (°C)
Patna 1.6 mm 40.6 30.0
Buxar 40.3
Ara (Bhojpur) 40.4
Valmikinagar 24.6

Patna was recorded as the hottest city in Bihar on Sunday with a maximum temperature of 40.6°C, while Valmikinagar remained the coolest at 24.6°C.

Cloudy Skies and Light Rain Likely in Patna on Monday

As per Monday’s forecast, cloudy skies will prevail over the state capital Patna, with chances of light rain and thunderstorm in isolated areas. The IMD has predicted continued variability in temperature over the next 48 hours, with minor fluctuations expected in both maximum and minimum readings.

Temperature Trend in Patna:

  • Maximum Temperature: 40.6°C

  • Minimum Temperature: 30.0°C

  • Drop in Minimum Temp: 0.5°C compared to previous day

This indicates increased atmospheric instability, typically observed during the pre-monsoon transitional phase.

What is Causing the Weather Disturbance in Bihar?

Meteorologists link the current weather conditions to:

  • Western disturbances moving across the Himalayan region

  • Moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal

  • Heat pockets over central and northern Bihar creating localized pressure zones

The combination of these elements is triggering thunderstorm activity in the state. The monsoon is yet to arrive fully in Bihar, and this transitional climate behavior is expected during early June.

Weather Forecast: Next 72 Hours Critical

While Monday’s warning is limited to select northern and northeastern districts, central Bihar including Patna, Nalanda, and Gaya may also experience light rain and gusty winds in the coming days.

Expected Developments:

  • Cloud cover to persist in major cities

  • Short spells of rainfall possible in evening hours

  • Wind speeds could cause minor damage to temporary structures

  • No major flooding or storm systems expected at this stage

Heat Continues in Southern and Central Bihar

Despite localised rainfall, southern districts like Gaya, Nawada, and Aurangabad continue to suffer from intense heat waves. Maximum temperatures in these regions have consistently crossed the 40°C mark, making heat stress a public concern.

Health experts and authorities have advised people to:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 12 PM and 4 PM

  • Monitor weather updates through official IMD channels

Farmers and Daily Wage Workers Urged to Stay Alert

Due to the forecast of strong winds and possible lightning, agriculture activities and construction work may be disrupted in the affected districts. Authorities have suggested:

  • Delaying irrigation and pesticide spraying for 24–48 hours

  • Securing temporary structures and rooftops

  • Taking livestock to safer enclosures

The Agriculture Department of Bihar has also issued an advisory for rural areas, especially in flood-prone zones.

Comparative Weather Patterns: A Look at Early June 2024 vs. 2025

A comparative analysis shows that Bihar is witnessing more heatwaves and less pre-monsoon rainfall this year compared to June 2024.

Metric June 2024 June 2025
Avg Max Temp in Patna 38.2°C 40.6°C
Avg Rainfall (June 1–2) 6.5 mm 1.6 mm
No. of Thunderstorm Alerts 2 4

This indicates a trend toward increased heat severity and reduced moisture—a worrying sign ahead of the monsoon.

Will Monsoon Arrive on Time in Bihar?

There is growing concern among agricultural planners and climate watchers about the delayed onset of the monsoon in Bihar. Although IMD had initially predicted a June 10–12 window for the monsoon to reach northern Bihar, a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal has reportedly slowed its northward movement.

Key Factors Causing Delay:

  • Lack of persistent low-pressure systems

  • Dry continental winds from northwest India

  • Inconsistent moisture inflow

Meteorological experts now suggest a revised estimate of June 15–18 for monsoon onset in Bihar, though final confirmation will depend on sea surface temperatures and upcoming wind patterns.

The weather conditions in Bihar remain unpredictable as the state transitions from peak summer into the early monsoon phase. With thunderstorm alerts issued for nine districts and extreme temperatures reported elsewhere, public awareness and preparedness are crucial.
