Delhi residents have been enduring extreme heat and humidity in recent days, but the weather is set to offer some relief over the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall across the capital. Following light to moderate rain on Friday, temperatures have started to drop, and the upcoming weekend promises to bring significant changes to the weather.

Weather Outlook for Delhi: Relief on the Horizon

For the past few days, Delhi has been under the grip of intense heat and uncomfortable humidity. The city’s maximum temperatures have been hovering above 40°C, making it difficult for residents to cope with the soaring heat. However, weather experts from IMD predict that this oppressive weather will soon change.

According to the IMD’s forecast, Delhi can expect moderate to heavy rainfall over the next two days, bringing much-needed relief to residents. The rainfall is expected to lower the temperatures significantly, offering a break from the sweltering conditions that have been prevalent in the region.

Yellow Alert Issued by IMD: What to Expect

The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the coming days. The alert is a precautionary measure to ensure that residents remain cautious and prepared for sudden weather changes. During this period, localized flooding, disruptions in traffic, and power outages may occur due to the rainfall, making it essential for the public to stay updated on the weather conditions.

While the rain will bring temporary relief, the IMD has warned that strong winds and thunderstorms could accompany the rain, which could lead to minor damage in some areas. Commuters are advised to be cautious while traveling, especially in low-lying areas, where waterlogging might occur.

Friday’s Weather: Rain Brings Immediate Relief

On Friday, July 4, 2025, Delhi saw light to moderate rainfall in several parts of the city. Areas like Pusa, Mayur Vihar, and Dwarka recorded some of the highest rainfall, providing much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures. This rainfall brought an immediate drop in the temperature, and the city’s residents could finally breathe a little easier.

In some regions, the temperatures dipped by several degrees, from 40°C to around 32°C, following the rainfall. While it was not enough to break the oppressive heat entirely, it provided a much-needed break from the relentless sunshine that has characterized Delhi’s weather in recent weeks.

Pusa Records the Highest Rainfall

Among the areas that received the most rainfall on Friday, Pusa in central Delhi recorded the heaviest downpour. According to weather reports, Pusa received more than 20 millimeters of rain within just a few hours, marking the highest rainfall of the day. The rainfall in this area helped significantly lower the temperature, as well as reducing the humidity levels that had been making the heat unbearable for residents.

The rainfall in Pusa also helped alleviate some of the pollution levels in the air, as it washed away dust and particulate matter from the atmosphere. While the air quality is still a concern, the rain provided a temporary improvement in the overall weather conditions.

Weekend Rainfall: What to Expect in the Coming Days

As Delhi heads into the weekend, the IMD is predicting that the rainfall will intensify, with moderate to heavy rain expected over the next 48 hours. Areas across the city, including the Central, Western, and Eastern districts, will likely experience rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. The intensity of the rain will increase in the evening hours, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend rainfall is expected to bring a sharp drop in temperatures, offering a reprieve from the recent heatwave. The maximum temperature is predicted to remain in the mid-30s, which is significantly lower than the high 40s that Delhi has been experiencing.

Impact of Rain on Delhi’s Infrastructure and Daily Life

While the rain will bring relief to Delhiites, it is also likely to disrupt normal life in several ways. Localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas, is expected due to the heavy downpour. Streets and roads in parts of the city, particularly near water bodies and drainages, may experience waterlogging, which could lead to traffic disruptions.

In addition, thunderstorms may cause temporary power outages in some areas. Residents are advised to take precautions by securing loose objects and ensuring that they are prepared for the possibility of power cuts.

Delhi’s infrastructure, particularly its drainage system, will be tested by the intensity of the rainfall. Poorly maintained drainage systems could lead to waterlogging, and the authorities have been advised to be on high alert to deal with any potential flooding issues.

Long-term Weather Forecast: More Relief on the Way

The relief from the oppressive heat and humidity is expected to last for the next several days. Following the weekend rains, light showers may continue in Delhi for the early part of next week. As the monsoon season begins to set in, the city can expect more frequent rainfall, which will help keep temperatures in check and bring down the humidity levels.

However, Delhi residents should be prepared for the usual monsoon inconveniences, such as traffic jams and occasional waterlogging. The city will need to be vigilant about its drainage system and overall infrastructure to manage the heavy rainfall that is common during the monsoon season.

Precautionary Measures for the Public

In light of the Yellow Alert issued by the IMD, residents are urged to take some precautionary measures during the weekend’s expected rainfall. Some of the safety guidelines include:

  1. Avoiding Travel During Heavy Rain: If possible, it is advised to stay indoors during the peak rainfall hours, especially during thunderstorms and heavy downpours.

  2. Staying Away from Waterlogged Areas: Avoid venturing into areas that are prone to waterlogging, particularly on roads and in low-lying neighborhoods.

  3. Securing Loose Objects: Strong winds may accompany the rainfall, so it is important to secure any loose objects, including plants, outdoor furniture, and vehicles, to prevent damage.

  4. Monitoring Weather Updates: Stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and warnings issued by the IMD to stay prepared for any sudden changes.

  5. Checking Drainage Systems: Ensure that gutters and drainage systems around your home or workplace are clear to avoid water accumulation.

Delhi’s residents can expect significant relief from the ongoing heatwave as moderate to heavy rains are set to hit the city this weekend. The IMD’s Yellow Alert serves as a reminder to stay cautious during the expected thunderstorms and gusty winds. While the rain will bring a drop in temperature and help clear the air, it also has the potential to disrupt daily life with localized flooding and power outages.

The rains this weekend will not only help alleviate the intense heat but will also signal the onset of the monsoon season, which is expected to bring more frequent showers and a reduction in the high humidity levels. Delhi residents are advised to stay prepared for these weather changes and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

As the monsoon begins to settle in, the capital can look forward to a much-needed break from the scorching temperatures, making the upcoming weeks more comfortable and pleasant.
