KKN Gurugram Desk | The United States has deported a total of 15,756 illegal Indian immigrants since 2009, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Addressing the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Jaishankar clarified that deportation of Indian nationals from the US is not a new phenomenon and has been occurring for years as part of immigration policies worldwide.

In light of recent political discussions, the minister emphasized the Indian government’s focus on tackling illegal immigration while ensuring the rights of deportees are protected. He also stated that India is in continuous dialogue with US authorities to prevent any mistreatment of deported individuals.

US Immigration Crackdown: Highest Deportation in 2019

As per official data, the highest number of Indians deported in a single year was 2,042 in 2019. The second-highest deportation occurred in 2020, with 1,889 Indian nationals sent back amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here is the year-wise breakdown of Indian immigrants deported from the US:

  • 2009: 734
  • 2010: 799
  • 2011: 597
  • 2012: 530
  • 2013: 515
  • 2014: 591
  • 2015: 708
  • 2016: 1,303
  • 2017: 1,024
  • 2018: 1,180
  • 2019: 2,042 (highest)
  • 2020: 1,889
  • 2021: 805
  • 2022: 862
  • 2023: 617
  • 2024: 1,368
  • 2025 (until February 5): 104

The recent deportation of 104 Indian migrants on a US military aircraft has sparked political debate in India. The opposition has questioned the Indian government’s role in ensuring dignified treatment of deported citizens.

104 Indian Migrants Deported in 2025: First Batch Under Trump Administration

US military aircraft carrying 104 Indian migrants landed in Amritsar on February 7, 2025. This marks the first deportation under the administration of former US President Donald Trump, who had previously initiated strict immigration crackdowns.

Among the deported individuals:

  • 33 are from Haryana
  • 33 from Gujarat
  • 30 from Punjab
  • 3 from Maharashtra
  • 3 from Uttar Pradesh
  • 2 from Chandigarh

Most of these deported individuals had paid large sums of money to human traffickers, hoping to enter the US through illegal routes. Many had undertaken perilous multi-country journeys, believing they would eventually secure legal status.

Inhumane Deportation Methods Spark Outrage

The US Border Patrol released a video showing Indian migrants being handcuffed and shackled before deportation. The footage revealed migrants being forced to perform a ‘shuffled walk’, a method commonly used for dangerous criminals.

This has triggered strong criticism from the opposition in India, with many questioning why the Indian government did not ensure a more humane repatriation process.

Opposition leader and Trinamool MP Saket Gokhale attacked the Modi government, stating:

“India is the fifth-largest economy in the world. Even smaller nations like Colombia have sent planes to bring back their citizens with dignity. Why couldn’t our government do the same?”

Political analysts believe this deportation controversy could become a major topic in upcoming elections, especially in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, which have high emigration rates.

Government’s Response: US Immigration Policies Have Been in Place Since 2012

In response to opposition criticism, Jaishankar defended the Indian government’s stance, explaining that deportations are executed by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He further clarified:

  • The current deportation policies have been in place since 2012.
  • The use of restraints (handcuffs and shackles) is a standard procedure.
  • Women and children are not subjected to shackles.
  • Basic amenities such as food, medical care, and sanitation are provided during deportation flights.
  • During toilet breaks, deportees are temporarily unrestrained when necessary.

Jaishankar assured that India is engaging in diplomatic talks with the US to ensure better treatment of deported individuals.

Why Are So Many Indians Deported From the US?

The US has intensified immigration crackdowns in recent years, with Indians being among the most affected migrant groups. Reasons for deportation include:

  1. Illegal Entry: Many Indians cross the US-Mexico border using fake documents or unauthorized travel routes.
  2. Visa Overstay: Thousands overstay their visas and fail to legalize their status.
  3. Failed Asylum Requests: Several migrants apply for asylum but fail to meet the eligibility criteria.
  4. Employment Fraud: Some work illegally without proper permits, leading to deportation orders.
  5. Increased US Surveillance: Under strict immigration policies, the US has boosted border security and workplace inspections, leading to higher deportation rates.

Many migrants take huge loans to finance their illegal entry, only to face detention and deportation, returning empty-handed and in financial distress.

Future of Indian Migrants in the US: What Lies Ahead?

With stricter immigration policies expected in 2025, experts predict:

  • More deportations of undocumented Indians in the coming months.
  • Stronger border controls, making illegal entry tougher.
  • Stricter scrutiny of visa applications, reducing chances of legal migration.
  • Rise in human trafficking cases, as desperate migrants seek alternative ways to enter the US.

The Indian government has urged its citizens to follow legal immigration routes and avoid falling prey to fraudulent immigration agents.

The deportation of over 15,756 illegal Indian immigrants since 2009 highlights the challenges faced by undocumented migrants in the US. The recent deportation of 104 Indians under strict conditions has raised serious questions about diplomatic efforts and the Indian government’s approach to safeguarding its citizens abroad.

As immigration policies continue to tighten, thousands of Indians seeking a better future in the US must rethink their strategies and explore safer, legal migration pathways.
