KKN Gurugram Desk | In a significant boost to regional rail connectivity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually flag off a new Vande Bharat Express this month from Bihar’s capital Patna to Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The launch is scheduled to coincide with the PM’s public rally in Siwan on June 20, 2025, as per official railway sources.
The upcoming semi-high-speed train, part of India’s prestigious Vande Bharat series, will pass through key North Bihar towns including Muzaffarpur, Bettiah, and Narkatiaganj, strengthening inter-state travel and reducing journey time significantly.
This newly proposed 16-coach Vande Bharat Express will operate between Patna and Gorakhpur, covering a distance of approximately 400 kilometers. Designed for comfort, speed, and efficiency, the train is expected to complete the journey in just 5 hours, making it the fastest rail service on this route.
Reduced travel time (from ~8 hours to 5 hours)
Enhanced connectivity for North Bihar districts
Comfortable travel option for inter-state commuters
Boost to regional development and tourism
Though the official timetable and route will be announced soon by the Railway Board, reports suggest the following tentative routing and timings for the Patna–Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express:
Patna
Hajipur
Muzaffarpur
Bapudham Motihari
Bettiah
Narkatiaganj
Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur to Patna:
Departure – 6:00 AM, Arrival – 11:00 AM
Patna to Gorakhpur:
Departure – 3:00 PM, Arrival – 8:00–9:00 PM
The train will run six days a week, with maintenance operations scheduled at Gorakhpur Junction.
The Patna-Gorakhpur corridor is one of the most travelled railway routes in eastern India, connecting the populous state of Bihar with eastern Uttar Pradesh. With hundreds of daily commuters, this new service will:
Significantly decongest existing trains
Help students, professionals, and pilgrims travel faster
Improve rail-based trade between Bihar and UP
Provide a modern alternative to conventional trains
Moreover, areas like Muzaffarpur, Motihari, and Bettiah—which are often underserved by premium trains—will now enjoy direct access to a high-speed train with world-class amenities.
Railway divisions under both East Central Railway (ECR) and North Eastern Railway (NER) have begun infrastructure upgrades and logistic coordination to ensure smooth operations. Key works include:
Platform height adjustments
Signaling system upgrades
Maintenance of track quality
Passenger information system testing
The route was finalized last month and sent for clearance to the Railway Board. Approval has now been granted, and final trial runs are expected within the next few days.
The train’s official inauguration will be carried out virtually by PM Modi during his scheduled rally in Siwan on June 20. Sources indicate the Prime Minister will address the public and flag off the train via live video feed.
This Vande Bharat Express is being viewed not only as a transport upgrade but also as a major infrastructure highlight during the election year, particularly targeting voter-rich regions in Bihar and UP.
The Patna–Gorakhpur train will become the latest addition to the expanding Vande Bharat Express fleet, which is envisioned to connect all major Indian cities with semi-high-speed rail by 2030.
Each Vande Bharat Express offers:
Modern seating and lighting
GPS-based passenger information systems
On-board Wi-Fi and infotainment
Automated doors and bio-vacuum toilets
Speed potential up to 160 km/h
By covering 400 km in under 5 hours, the train is expected to operate at an average speed of ~80 km/h, depending on route congestion and halts.
In addition to the Patna–Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express, the Indian Railways is actively working on:
Gaya–Ayodhya Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Corridor
Expansion of semi-high-speed routes via Saharsa and Darbhanga
Upgrading platforms and tracks for faster goods and passenger trains
These initiatives signal a broader plan to modernize Bihar’s rail infrastructure and improve national connectivity.
Local commuters and rail enthusiasts have expressed excitement over the upcoming train. For thousands of daily passengers who rely on slow express and intercity trains, the Vande Bharat launch is being seen as a game-changer.
“I travel from Muzaffarpur to Gorakhpur every week. If the Vande Bharat saves me even two hours, it’s a huge deal,” said Rajeev Kumar, a college lecturer.
Business owners, especially those dealing in textiles, agriculture, and logistics, are also hopeful that faster rail connectivity will boost commerce between Bihar and eastern UP.
With the imminent launch of the Patna–Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express, India is not just adding another train to its map—it’s connecting communities, shortening distances, and accelerating regional growth.
