The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rain across various states in India over the next seven days. After the arrival of the monsoon, the country experienced widespread rainfall in several regions, providing relief from the scorching heat and resolving water scarcity issues. However, in some areas, the rainfall has been so intense that it led to flooding, causing inconvenience for the people living in these regions.

The IMD has now issued a heavy rain alert for the period from July 25th to July 31st, 2025. While some states are expected to witness light rainfall, others will experience heavy downpours, leading to potential disruptions. In this article, we provide a detailed overview of which states will be affected by the rainfall and the specific forecast for each region.

Delhi’s Weather Outlook for the Next Week

According to the IMD, the capital city of Delhi will see minimal chances of heavy rain over the next seven days. However, there could be occasional light showers. Additionally, the weather department has predicted the possibility of gusty winds and thunderstorms during this period, though heavy rainfall is unlikely.

States Likely to Experience Heavy Rain

Several regions in India are expected to face heavy rainfall due to the ongoing monsoon. The IMD has provided specific alerts for each region. Below are the states where heavy rain is predicted:

  1. Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Konkan, and Saurashtra:
These areas will continue to experience intermittent heavy rainfall over the next week. The rains will be particularly intense in the coastal regions of Maharashtra and Goa. In Gujarat and the Saurashtra region, the rainfall will increase in frequency, with thunderstorms expected in many areas.

  2. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Vidarbha:
The IMD has issued alerts for these regions, indicating that heavy rainfall is likely between July 25-28, and then again from July 30-31. Along with heavy showers, gusty winds are expected in various places, which may cause temporary disruptions.

  3. Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Lakshadweep:
In these states, heavy rain is predicted to occur from July 25-29. The southern states will experience a surge in rainfall, with thunderstorms expected to accompany the showers. Coastal areas in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will also face significant downpours.

  4. Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana:
These northern and northwestern states will experience gusty winds and heavy rain. The IMD has forecast rainfall at several places from July 25-31. Thunderstorms are also likely, and residents in these regions should remain cautious.

  5. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura:
The northeastern states will experience heavy rainfall over the next week. These states will see substantial rainfall, with many areas expecting continuous downpours throughout the period.

Light Rainfall to Continue in Several Regions

In addition to the heavy rain forecast, the IMD has also issued warnings for light to moderate rainfall in various parts of the country. Areas in Northwest India, South India, East India, West India, and Northeast India are expected to experience intermittent showers. These light showers will continue over the next seven days, providing some relief from the heat, but not as intense as the heavy rainfall expected in other areas.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Alerts

Apart from heavy rainfall, the IMD has also warned of thunderstorms in many regions. As per the forecast, thunderstorms and lightning strikes are likely to occur in several parts of the country. These weather conditions can be dangerous, so residents are advised to stay indoors during periods of heavy storms. The possibility of lightning strikes could pose risks to life and property, especially in areas with open fields or forests.

Rajasthan’s Weather: A Turn for the Worse

In Rajasthan, the monsoon rains had temporarily subsided, causing an increase in the temperature. However, the IMD predicts that the monsoon will take a turn by July 27, with some parts of Rajasthan experiencing light to heavy rainfall. The rainfall will likely pick up from July 27 to 31, providing much-needed relief to the people in the region. The IMD has issued a weather warning for these dates, indicating the possibility of intense showers in parts of Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner.

Why is This Heavy Rainfall Significant?

This period of heavy rainfall could have several important consequences. For one, it may affect the ongoing flood recovery efforts in many areas that have already experienced substantial rain. Flood-prone regions like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha are expected to be at risk once again. Additionally, the intense showers can lead to disruptions in travel, agriculture, and daily life. Roads could become waterlogged, and landslides may occur in hilly areas, especially in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Kashmir.

The rainfall is also significant for the agricultural sector. Areas like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar are expected to see substantial rainfall, which will help replenish water supplies and improve crop yields. However, too much rain in a short time can be detrimental, leading to the potential for crop damage and delays in harvesting.

Preparing for Heavy Rain and Storms

Residents in areas expecting heavy rainfall should take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves and their property. The IMD advises people to stay updated on the latest weather alerts through official channels. Here are some important steps to follow:

  1. Avoid Travel During Heavy Rains:
If possible, stay indoors during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms. If travel is unavoidable, make sure to plan for possible delays due to waterlogged roads.

  2. Secure Your Property:
Ensure that your house is protected from water damage. Check that gutters and drains are clear of debris to prevent waterlogging. If you live in a flood-prone area, consider moving valuables to higher ground.

  3. Stay Informed:
Keep track of the weather through official government notifications. Pay attention to IMD alerts and take necessary precautions if severe weather is expected.

  4. Be Prepared for Power Outages:
Heavy rain and storms often lead to power cuts. It is wise to have backup lighting like flashlights or candles available. Also, make sure your mobile phones and other essential devices are fully charged.

The next week will bring significant weather changes across India. While some regions will experience intermittent light rainfall, others will face heavy downpours, leading to potential disruptions. The IMD has issued several weather alerts, particularly for states in the west, north, and northeast of India. Citizens are advised to remain cautious, stay updated on weather forecasts, and take necessary precautions to stay safe during thunderstorms and heavy rain.

As always, the monsoon season in India plays a crucial role in replenishing water supplies but also comes with its own set of challenges. Proper preparedness is key to minimizing the risks associated with heavy rainfall and storms.
