Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, has put to rest any doubts regarding his leadership as he firmly declared that he will serve as the Chief Minister for the full five-year term. His strong statement comes amidst rising discussions and vocal support from party legislators who back Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) DK Shivakumar as the future CM. This political development comes at a time when the Congress party in Karnataka is facing a wave of leadership questions, particularly after the recent elections.

Siddaramaiah’s Defiant Statement on His Leadership

On July 2, 2025, Siddaramaiah made his position clear during a press interaction in Bengaluru, saying, “I will be the Chief Minister of Karnataka for five years; why should there be any doubt?” This strong declaration from the senior Congress leader is intended to address growing speculation about the leadership change within the party. As party loyalists and Congress legislators express their backing for DK Shivakumar as the potential future CM, Siddaramaiah’s statement is seen as an effort to maintain unity and prevent any fractures within the party ranks.

Siddaramaiah, who has served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka in the past, reiterated his commitment to leading the state, brushing aside concerns and affirming that his leadership will continue for the duration of the current term. His assertion aims to ensure that the party stays focused on governance and public welfare, rather than on internal leadership disputes.

DK Shivakumar Responds: No Disgruntlement Within the Party

While Siddaramaiah’s statement puts the leadership question to rest for now, DK Shivakumar, the state Congress president and Deputy Chief Minister, has also weighed in on the matter. Shivakumar stated that he has never sought to be made the Chief Minister and emphasized the importance of unity within the party. He further added that he had “no option” but to support Siddaramaiah and his leadership. “What option do I have? I have to stand by him and support him,” Shivakumar said, signaling that his loyalty to the party and its decisions would always come first, irrespective of the ongoing leadership discussions.

Shivakumar also made it clear that the speculation surrounding the leadership change has been created externally. “I have not asked anyone to make me the CM,” he remarked, reiterating that the party’s focus should be on the people of Karnataka, and not on personal ambitions. He further warned that party leaders making public statements about leadership changes would face consequences, signaling his firm stance on maintaining party discipline.

Shivakumar also addressed the issue of party worker support, saying, “Everyone has worked hard. Thousands of party workers have to be considered. We must think about them first.” His words underscore the importance of collective effort and the party’s grassroots strength in determining leadership decisions.

No Disgruntlement, Says DK Shivakumar

Shivakumar, who enjoys considerable support among the party’s rank and file, also stressed that there was no disgruntlement or unrest within the ruling Congress party regarding Siddaramaiah’s leadership. This comment aims to alleviate any concerns among the public or party supporters about internal friction. Shivakumar’s support for Siddaramaiah is being seen as a tactical move to ensure that the Congress party remains united in the run-up to the next assembly elections.

Congress MLAs Push for Leadership Change

Despite the clarifications from both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, a section of Congress MLAs in Karnataka have called for a leadership change. According to Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain, nearly 100 party legislators have shown their support for DK Shivakumar to become the next Chief Minister of the state. This demand, voiced publicly by several MLAs, is based on the perception that Shivakumar may be better positioned to take on the opposition and lead the party to victory in the 2025 state elections.

Hussain has even raised the issue with Randeep Singh Surjewala, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, urging him to take action and consider a leadership change. This has led to speculation that the party might indeed be contemplating a shift in leadership as it prepares for upcoming electoral battles.

However, Randeep Singh Surjewala has sought to downplay these calls for leadership change, stating that there has been no official discussion or decision on this matter. Surjewala, who is actively meeting with Congress MLAs to discuss the state’s political situation, emphasized that the party is focused on delivering results and strengthening its position ahead of the elections, rather than getting embroiled in leadership debates.

The Political Dynamics of Karnataka Congress

The ongoing discussions about leadership within the Karnataka Congress come at a critical time for the party. The state assembly elections are approaching, and the party needs to project a unified front if it is to stand a chance against the BJP, which has emerged as a formidable political force in the state. Leadership disagreements or public displays of division could significantly damage the party’s chances at the polls.

Despite the growing support for DK Shivakumar among certain sections of the Congress, especially those who view him as a strong and decisive leader, Siddaramaiah’s assertion of his leadership and Shivakumar’s public backing demonstrate the party’s efforts to maintain stability. Both leaders are seen as influential figures, with Siddaramaiah’s experience and Shivakumar’s grassroots connect being crucial to the party’s strategy moving forward.

Unity Over Leadership: Congress’s Strategy

The Congress party is currently facing a critical juncture. While Siddaramaiah remains firm in his position as Chief Minister for the full term, the party must address the internal dynamics and concerns raised by MLAs and supporters. The key to Congress’s success in the upcoming elections lies in maintaining party unity, ensuring that leaders like Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar continue to work together for the greater good of Karnataka.

At this point, it is clear that the Congress will need to balance the aspirations and concerns of various factions within the party. The leadership issue must be resolved with careful diplomacy to prevent any fractures that could affect their performance in the elections. It is also important for Congress to ensure that the message of unity and focus on governance resonates with voters, particularly in the context of growing political challenges in the state.

As Siddaramaiah firmly asserts his leadership for the next five years, and DK Shivakumar pledges his loyalty and support, the Congress party in Karnataka is facing a crucial phase. With rising calls for leadership change and differing opinions within the party, the coming months will be pivotal in determining the direction of the Congress in Karnataka.

The Congress party will need to navigate these internal dynamics carefully, balancing the interests of key leaders while maintaining its focus on the voters and addressing critical issues. The leadership question, while momentarily settled, will continue to be a focal point in the political discussions in Karnataka as the state moves towards the next assembly elections. The party’s ability to maintain unity and effectively manage internal disagreements will play a crucial role in its future prospects.
