A lawyer by profession and former Secretary of Government in Bogotá, Uribe Turbay is known for his eloquence, policy expertise, and deep-rooted political lineage—his grandfather Julio César Turbay was Colombia’s president from 1978 to 1982.
While the official motive behind the attack is yet to be confirmed, political analysts and party insiders suggest a targeted assassination attempt rooted in growing polarization and deep-seated security threats in the country.
The Democratic Center Party, in a statement issued shortly after the attack, condemned it as an “unacceptable act of political violence.” “This is not just an attack on our candidate but on Colombian democracy,” the statement read.
Bogotá’s Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán confirmed via social media that the suspected gunman has been arrested. Authorities are conducting a full-scale investigation with support from national intelligence and anti-terror units.
