KKN Gurugram Desk | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts across Bihar, warning residents of sudden weather changes, including thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and lightning. The alerts are in effect for Sunday, May 4, 2025, as the state experiences a significant shift in weather patterns.

Sudden Weather Shift Across Bihar

On Sunday, residents across Bihar, including the capital city Patna, witnessed a sudden change in weather conditions. What began as a sunny day quickly transformed into overcast skies, followed by strong winds and heavy rainfall. The IMD reported wind speeds reaching up to 50 km/h in certain areas, accompanied by lightning strikes.

The IMD’s yellow and orange alerts signify the potential for severe weather events. A yellow alert indicates the possibility of adverse weather conditions, while an orange alert suggests a higher likelihood of severe weather that could disrupt daily activities. Residents are advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions.

Districts Under Alert

The following districts are under weather alerts due to the anticipated severe weather conditions:

These alerts are based on the IMD’s forecast of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and lightning in these regions. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

Heavy Rainfall and Lightning Expected in Eastern and Southern Districts

The IMD has identified several districts in eastern and southern Bihar that are likely to experience heavy rainfall and lightning. These include Purnia, Katihar, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Saharsa, Madhepura, Bhagalpur, Banka, Jamui, Munger, and Khagaria. Residents in these areas should prepare for potential disruptions and ensure safety measures are in place.

Temperature Fluctuations and Heatwave Warnings

Despite the rainfall, temperatures across Bihar have remained high. On Saturday, Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 39°C and a minimum of 21.4°C. The IMD forecasts that from May 6, westerly winds may lead to further increases in temperature, particularly in western districts such as Buxar, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Arwal, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, and both West and East Champaran. A heatwave warning has been issued for these areas, advising residents to take precautions against high temperatures.

Record-Breaking Rainfall in April

April 2025 witnessed unprecedented rainfall in Bihar, breaking a 79-year-old record. On April 11, Patna experienced 42.6 mm of rainfall, surpassing the previous record of 34 mm set in 1983. Overall, the state received 170% more rainfall than the average for April, leading to increased water levels in rivers and beneficial moisture for agricultural activities.

IMD’s Advisory to Residents

The IMD advises residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, avoid sheltering under trees, and secure loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds. Farmers are encouraged to take measures to protect their crops from potential damage due to the sudden weather changes.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and advisories issued by the IMD and local authorities. Taking proactive measures can help ensure safety during these sudden weather events.
