Bihar Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Forecast for Next Four Days

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | The southwest monsoon has officially gripped Bihar, bringing widespread rainfall across all 38 districts. As the monsoon current intensifies, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Bihar rain alert, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next three to four days.

According to the latest forecast from the Meteorological Centre in Patna, the monsoon system is gaining momentum, with increasing moisture levels in the westerly winds. This surge is expected to result in persistent showers, localized thunderstorms, and strong winds, affecting daily life, especially in vulnerable regions.

Monsoon Alert Zones: Orange and Yellow Alerts Across Bihar

The IMD has sounded an Orange Alert for 15 districts, indicating a high probability of severe weather events such as heavy downpours and lightning. Meanwhile, 23 districts have been placed under a Yellow Alert, suggesting moderate rainfall with potential localized disruption.

This marks a critical period for residents across the state as heavy monsoon activity continues to spread its influence across both urban and rural areas.

Districts on High Alert for Monsoon Activity

While the IMD has not publicly named each district in today’s briefing, sources indicate that the high-alert zones include districts in North and Central Bihar, traditionally prone to flooding and lightning strikes during monsoon onset.

Key Weather Predictions for Bihar (June 21–24):

  • Heavy Rainfall: Daily rain showers expected in most districts

  • Thunderstorms and Lightning: Widespread lightning strikes likely

  • Wind Gusts: Winds blowing at 30–40 km/h, especially during storms

  • Waterlogging: Low-lying areas may witness flooding

Temperature Relief for Heat-Weary Residents

After weeks of scorching heat and suffocating humidity, Bihar weather is finally bringing relief. The IMD has forecast a drop of 2–3°C in maximum temperatures over the coming days, thanks to sustained cloud cover and continuous rain activity.

  • Expected Maximum Temperature: 29–31°C

  • Expected Minimum Temperature: 23–25°C

This reduction will help alleviate the heat index and improve comfort levels for residents, particularly those in the plains.

Precautionary Advice from IMD and State Authorities

The weather department has issued an advisory urging residents to stay indoors during lightning and storm activity. People working in agricultural fields, open grounds, and elevated locations have been warned to take shelter and avoid exposure during thunderstorms.

The state administration has also been placed on alert. Disaster management teams and district magistrates have been instructed to remain vigilant and ensure emergency preparedness.

Safety Guidelines for Citizens:

  • Avoid taking shelter under isolated trees during thunderstorms.

  • Unplug electrical appliances during lightning storms.

  • Farmers should avoid working in fields when lightning is predicted.

  • Commuters are advised to check weather updates before travel.

Positive Impact on Agriculture, But Risks Remain

While the intensity of monsoon rain may pose challenges, agricultural experts see a silver lining. The early and active onset of the monsoon is expected to boost sowing activities, especially for paddy, maize, and pulses.

However, excessive rainfall in a short period can cause waterlogging, soil erosion, and damage to freshly planted crops. The government is likely to issue further advisories for farmers to help mitigate these risks.

Expert Opinion:

“This burst of rain is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it helps timely sowing; on the other, if drainage fails or the rainfall is too concentrated, it could lead to localized crop loss,” said a senior agro-climatologist from Rajendra Agriculture University.

Urban Flooding and Power Disruptions Possible

Urban centers like Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, and Bhagalpur may face challenges such as drainage overflow, waterlogging in underpasses, and traffic congestion. Additionally, lightning strikes and falling trees during strong winds could lead to temporary power outages in both rural and semi-urban zones.

Residents are advised to stock essential items, charge their mobile phones, and keep battery-powered torches ready in case of emergency.

Government Response and Preparedness

In response to the IMD’s warning, the State Disaster Management Department (SDMD) has initiated a monitoring protocol in all districts. Control rooms have been activated, and emergency teams are on standby to provide rapid assistance in case of flooding, lightning injuries, or infrastructure damage.

Chief Minister’s Office has directed all district collectors to remain in active communication with the IMD and respond immediately to any emergency calls. Relief shelters and sandbags have been arranged in vulnerable flood-prone areas.

Meteorologists predict that this active phase of the monsoon may persist for the next several days. As such, frequent weather bulletins will be released. Residents are encouraged to follow official government channels, weather apps, and local news platforms like KKN Live for real-time weather alerts and safety information.
