Bihar Braces for Severe Weather: IMD Issues Yellow and Orange Alerts Amidst Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall

KKN Gurugram Desk | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts across various districts in Bihar, forecasting thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds from April 16 to April 19. This weather pattern is attributed to moisture-laden easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal and an active western disturbance affecting the region.

April 16: Yellow Alert

The IMD has placed the following districts under a yellow alert, anticipating thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds reaching 30–40 km/h:

  • Buxar

  • Bhojpur

  • Kaimur

  • Rohtas

  • Aurangabad

  • Arwal

  • Gaya

  • Nawada

  • Jehanabad

  • Nalanda

  • Sheikhpura

  • Begusarai

April 17: Orange Alert

An orange alert has been issued for the following districts, predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds up to 50–60 km/h:

  • Jamui

  • Banka

  • Munger

  • Bhagalpur

  • Khagaria

  • Katihar

  • Purnia

  • Saharsa

  • Madhepura

  • Kishanganj

  • Araria

  • Supaul

  • Samastipur

  • Vaishali

  • Darbhanga

  • Madhubani

  • Saran

  • Muzaffarpur

  • Sheohar

  • Sitamarhi

  • Siwan

  • Gopalganj

  • East Champaran

  • West Champaran

April 18–19: Continued Alerts

The IMD continues to monitor the situation, with yellow and orange alerts persisting in various districts. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.

Temperature and Rainfall Data

The recent weather changes have led to a noticeable drop in temperatures across Bihar. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 34°C and 36°C, while minimum temperatures may hover between 22°C and 24°C.

In the past 48 hours, Jamui district recorded the highest rainfall at 48.6 mm, significantly impacting local conditions.

Safety Advisories

The IMD and disaster management authorities have issued the following guidelines:

  • Residents should remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open areas.

  • Farmers are advised to take precautions while working in fields and secure harvested crops to prevent damage.

  • Local administrations are on alert to manage any emergencies arising from the adverse weather conditions.
