The accident took place near Jamuka village in the Roza police station area of Shahjahanpur district at approximately 4:00 AM, when a car rammed into a stationary truck parked along the highway.

Family from Gorakhpur Was En Route to Nainital

According to police sources, all the occupants of the car were residents of Malviya Nagar in Khajabar Police Station area of Gorakhpur district. The family was reportedly on their way to Nainital for a vacation when the tragic incident occurred.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Shweta Dwivedi (42) – wife of Neeraj Dwivedi

  • Shivam Pandey (35) – son of Krishna Kumar

  • Madhavan (2.5 years) – son of Shivam Pandey

All three victims died on the spot due to the severe impact of the collision.

Shocking Family Tragedy: Deceased Were Siblings

In a particularly heart-wrenching twist, it was later confirmed that Shweta Dwivedi and Shivam Pandey were real siblings, further deepening the grief of the bereaved family. The news of their sudden demise triggered emotional scenes back home in Gorakhpur, where family members were seen in a state of profound shock and sorrow.

Three Critically Injured, Including a 2-Year-Old Child

The accident also left three other passengers critically injured, all of whom were traveling in the same car. They have been identified as:

  • Angad Yadav (23)

  • Shalini Pandey (27)

  • Siddhu Dwivedi (2 years)

All three victims were immediately transported to the Shahjahanpur District Hospital, where their condition is said to be critical but stable.

Hospital authorities confirmed that multiple fractures and internal injuries were reported. One of the children is currently in the pediatric ICU, receiving round-the-clock care.

Initial Police Investigation Suggests Driver Fatigue as Cause

Police officers who arrived at the scene conducted a preliminary investigation. They believe that the accident was likely caused by driver fatigue or drowsiness, a common cause of early-morning highway crashes.

“It appears the driver may have dozed off at the wheel, leading to the vehicle crashing directly into the rear of a parked truck,” said a senior police official from Roza police station.

Bodies Recovered from Mangled Vehicle, Sent for Post-Mortem

The crash was so severe that the vehicle was completely crushed at the front. Local residents and emergency responders took nearly 30 minutes to extricate the bodies trapped inside the car.

The deceased were sent for autopsy at the district hospital morgue, while the truck has been seized and its driver is currently being questioned.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) and are also probing whether the truck was illegally parked or lacked reflective markings.

Growing Concerns Over Highway Safety in India

This accident once again highlights the serious safety challenges on India’s national highways, especially related to:

  • Poor visibility of parked vehicles at night

  • Lack of dedicated rest zones for long-distance drivers

  • Minimal roadside lighting and signage in rural stretches

  • Driver fatigue and over-speeding

According to NCRB data, over 150,000 road fatalities occur annually in India, with a significant percentage caused by vehicle collisions involving trucks and parked vehicles.

Public Response and Local Outrage

Residents in the Jamuka area have expressed anger over unsafe parking practices on the highway. Eyewitnesses claim that trucks are often parked haphazardly, without hazard lights or warning signs, especially near narrow and unlit sections.

A local shopkeeper said:

“This isn’t the first time such an accident has occurred here. Authorities need to take stricter action against illegal parking and improve highway surveillance.”

Government Response and Need for Action

Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been notified of the incident. They are expected to conduct an on-site safety audit, and local authorities have promised to review parking policies for commercial vehicles along this stretch.

Advocates for road safety are once again calling for:

  • Mandatory reflectors on all commercial vehicles

  • More highway patrol units

  • Public awareness campaigns on defensive driving

  • Better infrastructure for night travel

Precautions for Highway Travel: What Experts Recommend

To prevent similar tragedies, road safety experts advise long-distance travelers to:

 Avoid night driving unless necessary
Take scheduled breaks every 2–3 hours
Never park vehicles on the road without warning lights
Use rest stops for driver recovery
Install dash cams and reflective stickers

What was supposed to be a joyful family trip to the hills of Nainital ended in a devastating tragedy on the Bareilly–Sitapur highway. With three lives lost and three others battling for survival, this accident is a stark reminder of the fragile nature of road travel in India.

As investigations continue and families grieve, the hope remains that authorities will enforce stronger safety norms and that travelers will adopt safer driving practices to prevent such irreparable losses in the future.
