Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a major relief for the state’s 14 crore residents. Starting from August 1, 2025, all domestic consumers in Bihar will receive 125 units of free electricity. Nitish Kumar made the announcement and stated that this relief will apply from the electricity bills of July 2025. The move is expected to benefit around 1.67 crore families in the state.

Free Electricity for All Domestic Consumers in Bihar

Nitish Kumar took to his social media account, X (formerly Twitter), to share the news. He wrote, “We have always provided electricity to the people at affordable rates. Now, we have decided that from August 1, 2025, meaning from the July bill itself, all domestic consumers in Bihar will not have to pay for up to 125 units of electricity.”

The announcement is a significant move aimed at reducing the financial burden on domestic consumers in Bihar. Nitish Kumar further explained that around 1.67 crore families in the state would benefit from this initiative. The free electricity will be a major relief for many families, especially in a state like Bihar, where electricity bills often add up to significant amounts for low-income households.

Solar Power Plan for Domestic Consumers

In his statement, Nitish Kumar also outlined a plan to promote solar energy in the state. He said, “We have also decided that over the next three years, we will install solar energy plants on the rooftops of homes or nearby public places with the consent of all domestic consumers. This initiative will help the families save more on their electricity bills in the long run.”

The Chief Minister added that under the “Kutir Jyoti Yojana” (Cottage Light Scheme), the state government will bear the full cost of installing solar energy systems for the poorest families. For the rest of the families, the government will provide appropriate support. This plan is aimed at promoting renewable energy and reducing the dependency on conventional sources of power.

The decision to introduce solar energy for domestic consumers aligns with the state’s long-term vision of promoting sustainable energy solutions. Nitish Kumar emphasized that this initiative will not only reduce electricity bills but also make Bihar one of the key states in India for solar power generation.

Estimated Solar Power Capacity in the Next Three Years

Nitish Kumar highlighted the ambitious plans for solar power generation in the state. He mentioned that within the next three years, the state is expected to generate up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy. This will contribute significantly to the state’s energy needs while also helping in reducing the carbon footprint.

The integration of solar power into domestic homes and public spaces is a crucial step in Bihar’s journey toward achieving energy sustainability. It will also help reduce the burden on the state’s power grid, especially during peak consumption periods.

How This Decision Will Affect Domestic Consumers

The free 125 units of electricity will be a big financial relief for families across Bihar. Currently, many households struggle to pay electricity bills, which can become a substantial expense, particularly for low-income families. By providing free electricity up to 125 units, the state government aims to ease the financial strain on its citizens, especially with the upcoming elections in mind.

According to estimates, about 1.67 crore families will directly benefit from this initiative. This will have a ripple effect on the state’s economy as it will increase disposable income for households, which can be used for other essentials.

Comparison with Delhi’s Electricity Subsidy

While Bihar is offering 125 units of free electricity, Delhi, the national capital, is currently providing 200 free units to its domestic consumers. Delhi’s electricity subsidy program has been successful in benefiting millions of its residents. According to reports, out of over 54.5 lakh domestic consumers in Delhi, more than 27 lakh consumers use up to 200 units of electricity each month. The Delhi government’s subsidy has played a significant role in making electricity more affordable for its citizens, particularly in low-income households.

Bihar’s move to provide 125 units of free electricity is seen as a step towards similar success, although it is slightly lower than Delhi’s offering. This move is expected to garner significant political support for Nitish Kumar’s government, particularly in the rural areas, where electricity is often a costly and unreliable commodity.

Political Impact of the Announcement

The announcement of free electricity for domestic consumers is strategically timed, just ahead of elections. This move is likely to appeal to a large segment of the population, especially those who rely on electricity for basic needs and have been burdened by high bills. Nitish Kumar’s government is expected to receive positive feedback for this initiative, as it directly addresses a common issue faced by residents across Bihar.

The decision to provide free electricity is also a part of a broader plan by Nitish Kumar’s government to improve the state’s infrastructure and increase the quality of life for its citizens. This initiative is expected to have long-lasting effects, particularly with the introduction of solar power, which could position Bihar as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.

A Future Focused on Renewable Energy

Nitish Kumar’s push for solar energy in Bihar is a key component of the state’s long-term energy strategy. The shift to renewable energy will help reduce the state’s reliance on traditional power sources, which often lead to power shortages and higher costs. With a focus on solar energy, the state is preparing for a future where power generation is more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

By encouraging solar power adoption in households, Bihar can not only meet its energy needs but also contribute to the country’s efforts in achieving its renewable energy targets. The installation of solar panels on rooftops and public spaces will make it easier for residents to generate their own electricity, reducing their dependence on the grid and lowering their electricity bills.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s decision to provide 125 units of free electricity to all domestic consumers is a bold and impactful move that will directly benefit millions of families. The introduction of solar energy systems over the next three years will further enhance the state’s energy security and promote sustainability.

With this initiative, Nitish Kumar is not only addressing immediate concerns regarding electricity affordability but is also setting the stage for a greener, more energy-efficient future. As the state continues to embrace renewable energy, Bihar could become a model for other states in India looking to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

This decision marks a significant moment for Bihar as it moves toward a future with more affordable and reliable electricity, benefiting millions of its citizens and contributing to the nation’s clean energy goals.
