KKN Gurugram Desk | In a tragic turn of events, the honeymoon of Indore couple Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya ended in disaster. Raja was found murdered, and Sonam remains missing. The case has garnered national attention, prompting Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to meet with Sonam’s family and assure them of all possible assistance.

The Disappearance and Discovery

Raja and Sonam, newlyweds from Indore, traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20, 2025. They were last seen on May 23 in Sohra (Cherrapunji). Their rented scooter was found abandoned near Osara Hills the following day. On June 2, Raja’s decomposed body was discovered in a gorge near Weisawdong falls. A machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered nearby. Sonam remains untraceable, and her whereabouts are unknown.

Family’s Plea for Justice

Raja’s family has expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation’s progress and has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. They fear that Sonam may have been abducted and possibly trafficked.

Minister Chouhan’s Intervention

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met with Sonam’s family in Indore, offering his support and assuring them that all efforts would be made to locate her. He also spoke to Sonam’s brother, Govind, who is in Meghalaya assisting with the search. Chouhan emphasized the importance of inter-state coordination in such cases and pledged to liaise with Meghalaya authorities to expedite the investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

Meghalaya police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. CCTV footage from a Shillong hotel shows the couple checking in on May 22. A white shirt, similar to the one Sonam was seen wearing, was found near Raja’s body. Authorities are exploring all possibilities, including foul play and human trafficking.

Community and Government Response

The case has sparked widespread concern, with both Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya governments under pressure to resolve the matter. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has reached out to his Meghalaya counterpart, Conrad Sangma, seeking assistance in the investigation. The Raghuvanshi family has announced a reward for information leading to Sonam’s whereabouts.

The tragic events surrounding Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi’s honeymoon have highlighted the need for robust safety measures for tourists and efficient inter-state collaboration in criminal investigations. As the search for Sonam continues, the nation watches closely, hoping for her safe return and justice for Raja.
