KSCA Officials Resign After Bengaluru Crowd Crush Kills 11

Published on

The tragic aftermath of a crowd stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru has prompted two senior officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to step down from their posts. Secretary A. Shankar and Treasurer E. Jayaram tendered their resignations on June 6, taking moral responsibility for the incident that claimed 11 lives and injured dozens.

What Happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium?

The fatal stampede occurred on June 4, 2025, just a day after Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clinched their maiden IPL title by defeating Punjab Kings in a nail-biting final. In celebration, the KSCA had organized a felicitation event for RCB players, scheduled at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Unfortunately, the event drew a crowd far exceeding the venue’s permissible capacity. As thousands of fans gathered outside the stadium gates to catch a glimpse of their heroes, chaos erupted due to mismanagement, overcrowding, and lack of proper crowd control. The resulting crush led to the death of 11 individuals and left nearly 50 injured.

KSCA Officials Take Responsibility

In a joint press release issued on June 7, both A. Shankar and E. Jayaram acknowledged the tragedy and submitted their resignations. While they emphasized that their direct involvement in organizing the event was limited, they stated that the incident warranted moral accountability from those in leadership.

“Due to the unfortunate and unforeseen events over the past two days, and despite our limited role in the event’s operational aspects, we have decided to tender our resignations to the KSCA President as Secretary and Treasurer respectively,” the press release said.

The letter has been formally accepted, and both officials expressed deep regret over the loss of lives, calling it a “dark day in Karnataka’s sporting history.”

Government Response and Public Backlash

The Karnataka state government has acted swiftly in response to the incident. Senior police officials responsible for stadium security have been suspended, and Chief Minister Dr. Basavaraj Shetty has ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter.

Political leaders, civil society members, and the general public have demanded transparency and accountability. The Karnataka Human Rights Commission has also sought a report from the KSCA and city police on crowd management protocols.

The Unfolding of the Tragedy

According to eyewitnesses, the crowd began gathering as early as noon, although the event was scheduled for late evening. Gates were opened without adequate police barricading or orderly queuing. Panic ensued when a section of the crowd surged forward, believing that players were about to appear on stage. Within minutes, the narrow lanes near the stadium became clogged, leading to a deadly stampede.

Local authorities confirmed that the stadium’s entrance points lacked emergency exits, and medical aid response was delayed due to blocked access roads. Video footage circulating on social media further highlighted the disarray and the desperation of attendees as the tragedy unfolded.

Casualties and Victim Profiles

Among the deceased were five women and six men, most of them in the 18-30 age group. Hospitals across Bengaluru reported a surge in emergency cases that night, with several attendees suffering from asphyxiation, fractures, and trauma.

One of the victims, Asha Rani, a 23-year-old student from Mysuru, had traveled over 150 kilometers just to attend the RCB event. Her grieving family has called for criminal charges against the organizers.

Security Failures Under Scrutiny

Several lapses have come under public scrutiny:

  • No prior ticketing or registration system was enforced, making it difficult to estimate or manage crowd size.

  • The number of deployed police and security personnel was grossly inadequate.

  • Medical tents were insufficient, and no trauma management protocols were in place.

Sources within the KSCA revealed that the event was rushed into planning after RCB’s victory and did not receive the standard operational clearances that such large-scale gatherings typically require.

BCCI and IPL Governing Council’s Reaction

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council expressed condolences and extended their support to the families of the victims. While distancing themselves from the operational planning of the felicitation ceremony, both bodies emphasized the importance of stringent crowd management in future public sporting events.

A BCCI spokesperson said:

“While the event was celebratory in nature, its consequences were tragic. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure better safety standards across venues.”

RCB Issues Statement

The Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise released a heartfelt message:

“We are devastated by the tragic incident at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones. We urge authorities to ensure that such an incident is never repeated again.”

Lessons and The Way Forward

This tragedy has reignited the debate around stadium safety in India. With increasing public participation in sports and entertainment events, experts argue that India’s urban infrastructure is ill-prepared for crowd surges.

Urban planning analysts and sports safety consultants have proposed the following:

  1. Mandatory event safety audits before approving any public gatherings in stadiums.

  2. Technological monitoring, such as crowd-density sensors and real-time surveillance.

  3. Better exit strategies, particularly in older stadiums that lack modern evacuation plans.

  4. On-site trauma response teams, in collaboration with local hospitals.

The Chinnaswamy Stadium tragedy is a sobering reminder of how lapses in planning and security can lead to catastrophic outcomes. While the resignation of KSCA officials is a welcome first step toward accountability, the need for systemic reform is more urgent than ever.

This incident must act as a catalyst for overhauling India’s approach to public safety in large events — not just in sports, but across all sectors involving mass gatherings. Only then can we ensure that the joy of celebration does not turn into mourning again.
