KKN Gurugram Desk | In a heart-wrenching incident, six teenage girls from the same extended family drowned in the Yamuna River near Nagla Swami village in Agra on Tuesday morning. The girls, aged between 12 and 18, had gone to the river to bathe and cool off amid the intense summer heat. Tragically, all six lost their lives after inadvertently stepping into a deep section of the river.

The unfortunate event occurred around 10:00 AM in the Sikandra area of Agra. The victims were identified as Muskan (18), Shivani (17), Naina (14), Divya (13), Sandhya (12), and Sonam (12). According to eyewitnesses, the girls were bathing near the riverbank when one of them ventured into deeper waters and began to struggle. In an attempt to rescue her, the others followed, but the strong current overwhelmed them all.

Local residents and family members present at the scene immediately called for help. Rescue operations were launched promptly, involving personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police. Four of the girls were declared dead at the scene, while the remaining two were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, both succumbed to their injuries later in the day.

Community and Official Response

The incident has plunged the local community into deep mourning. Family members were inconsolable, and the entire village gathered to pay their respects. District Magistrate Aravind Mallappa Bangari and Additional Commissioner of Police Ram Badan Singh visited the site to oversee the situation and offer condolences.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief over the tragic loss of young lives. He announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for each victim’s family from the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. The CM also directed district authorities to provide all necessary support to the bereaved families.

Safety Concerns and Preventive Measures

This tragic event underscores the need for increased awareness and safety measures around natural water bodies, especially during the summer months when individuals often seek relief from the heat. Authorities have reiterated that the section of the Yamuna River where the incident occurred is not a designated bathing area and lacks proper safety infrastructure.

In light of the incident, local officials are considering implementing the following measures:

  • Installation of Warning SignsErecting clear signage to indicate dangerous areas and discourage bathing in non-designated zones.

  • Community Awareness ProgramsEducating residents, especially children and teenagers, about the risks associated with swimming in rivers without proper supervision.

  • Enhanced PatrolsIncreasing the presence of local authorities near riverbanks to monitor activities and prevent unauthorized bathing.

The drowning of six young girls in Agra’s Yamuna River is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by natural water bodies, particularly during the scorching summer months. As the community grieves this immense loss, there is a collective call for heightened safety measures and public awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
