KKN Gurugram Desk | Bihar’s weather has taken a significant turn, with the Meteorological Department issuing a Yellow Alert for 13 districts of the state on Saturday, April 19, 2025. The alert comes with predictions of light to moderate rain, gusty winds, and the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning. On the other hand, the rest of the state is likely to experience extreme heat, with clear skies and soaring temperatures.

Key Highlights:

  • Yellow Alert for 13 districts in Bihar on Saturday.

  • Heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning expected in specific districts.

  • Heatwave forecast for Bihar from April 23, 2025, with temperatures possibly rising to 40°C.

Yellow Alert Issued for 13 Districts in Bihar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for 13 districts of Bihar, warning residents of light to moderate rainfall coupled with gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h. Along with this, thunderstorms and lightning are expected. The affected districts include:

  • Supaul

  • Araria

  • Kishanganj

  • Madhepura

  • Saharsa

  • Purnia

  • Khagaria

  • Katihar

  • Bhagalpur

  • Munger

  • Jamui

  • Banka

This warning comes as part of the ongoing seasonal weather changes across the state, triggered by moist easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, which are influencing the region’s climate. People in these districts are advised to stay cautious and prepared for sudden weather changes, including potential power outages due to the storms.

Weather Outlook for Other Districts

In the remaining 26 districts of Bihar, the weather is expected to be clear, with intense sunshine and rising heat. The maximum temperature could range between 37°C to 39°C, leading to a significant increase in the heat. The capital city, Patna, is expected to see some cloud cover, though the maximum temperature could touch 38°C. In the coming days, temperatures in several parts of Bihar are expected to rise further, potentially reaching 40°C by the end of next week.

Heatwave Threat After April 23

According to meteorologists, the heatwave conditions in Bihar will intensify after April 23, 2025. The rise in temperature will be accompanied by high humidity, making the situation even more uncomfortable for residents. By April 25-26, there are predictions that heatwave conditions could become severe, posing a serious health risk, particularly to the elderly and children.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, especially between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, when the sun is at its most intense. Authorities have advised the public to keep hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Recent Weather: Rain and Storms Impact Bihar

In the last 24 hours, parts of Bihar have experienced significant rainfall and thunderstorms. Patna and Sitamarhi saw heavy rains and strong winds late at night. The rain started at 3:00 AM and continued until 7:00 AM, causing waterlogging in various areas of Patna. However, by 11:00 AM, the skies cleared, and the sun reappeared, offering some relief from the stormy weather.

In terms of temperature, Rohtas recorded the highest temperature in Bihar, with the mercury rising to 39.6°C. Aurangabad followed with 36°C, while the temperature in Patna hovered around 29.1°C during the day.

Health Precautions Amid Heat and Storms

With the heatwave on the horizon and the sudden weather changes, health experts are advising residents to take the following precautions:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

  2. Avoid Direct Sun Exposure: Limit outdoor activities, especially during the peak heat hours (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM).

  3. Wear Light Clothing: Light-colored, loose-fitting clothes help maintain body temperature and keep you cool.

  4. Take Care of Children and Elderly: Vulnerable individuals should stay indoors and avoid exertion in the heat.

  5. Use Sunscreen: For those who need to be outside, applying sunscreen can help protect the skin from harmful UV rays.

Precautions to Take During Thunderstorms and Lightning

Residents in the Yellow Alert districts, especially those expecting thunderstorms, should be cautious. Here are some important precautions to keep in mind:

  • Stay Indoors: If you hear thunder or see lightning, seek shelter immediately. Avoid staying under trees or open structures during storms.

  • Turn Off Electrical Appliances: To avoid lightning strikes causing power surges, unplug sensitive electronic equipment.

  • Do Not Use Water: Avoid using water sources, such as taps or showers, during a storm, as plumbing may attract lightning.

Seasonal Weather Changes and Long-Term Outlook

The recent weather shifts in Bihar are largely due to the moist easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. These winds bring moisture, which results in rainfall and thunderstorms across various parts of the state. However, the arrival of heatwaves post-April 23 signals a dramatic change, with increasing temperatures and a greater risk of heat stress and dehydration.

Meteorologists have also noted that the monsoon season in Bihar typically begins around mid-June, and while the immediate weather trend will be marked by rising heat and occasional storms, it is crucial to prepare for the upcoming transition into the summer months.

As Bihar experiences fluctuating weather conditions, residents are urged to stay vigilant and prepared for both the upcoming rainstorm events and the heatwave conditions expected later in the month. The state’s meteorological department continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue further alerts as necessary. Citizens should heed these warnings, take necessary precautions, and stay informed through reliable news sources.
