Breakdown of BCCI Women’s Central Contracts for 2024-25

The BCCI has divided the players into three grades based on their performances and contributions to the Indian women’s cricket team. These grades are categorized as Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C.

  • Grade A (Top Tier): The top tier includes three of India’s leading women cricketers: Harmanpreet KaurSmriti Mandhana, and Deepti Sharma. All three players have been crucial to the Indian women’s cricket team’s success over the past few years, and their consistency and leadership qualities make them deserving of this honor. Harmanpreet Kaur, the team’s captain, has been instrumental in leading India on the stage, and her contribution with both bat and leadership has set a high standard for Indian women’s cricket. Smriti Mandhana, known for her explosive batting skills, and Deepti Sharma, an all-rounder with -winning performances in all formats, have both been outstanding assets to the team.

  • Grade B (Mid Tier): Four players have made it to Grade B. These are players who have shown promise and delivered solid performances for the team but have not yet reached the same level of consistency and impact as those in Grade A. The names of these players will be critical in ensuring the team remains competitive in international cricket and provides the support needed for the senior players.

  • Grade C (Lower Tier): The Grade C category includes nine players who have been valuable members of the team but still have room for growth and improvement. These players contribute to the squad in various formats, often stepping up in crucial moments, but their performances have not yet been at the same level as those in Grade A and B. The list of players in this category represents the next generation of India’s women cricketers, who are working hard to make their mark.

Key Highlights and Analysis of Women’s Cricket Central Contracts

The central contract system is a significant development in women’s cricket, reflecting the BCCI’s commitment to providing equal opportunities and recognition to female cricketers. This move comes as part of the BCCI’s broader efforts to increase investment in women’s cricket and make it more visible to audiences across the world. By introducing central contracts, the BCCI is ensuring that women cricketers receive the financial security and incentives they deserve for their hard work and dedication to the sport.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s Continued Dominance

The captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, Harmanpreet Kaur, remains at the top of her game and is one of the highest-ranked cricketers in the world. Kaur’s leadership on the field and her power-packed batting performances have made her a standout player in world cricket. Her inclusion in Grade A solidifies her position as one of the most influential women cricketers globally.

Smriti Mandhana’s Global Impact

Smriti Mandhana has been a consistent performer for India across all formats. Known for her elegant stroke play and aggressive batting, Mandhana has emerged as one of the most promising players in women’s cricket. Her consistent performances on the international stage have earned her a well-deserved spot in Grade A, confirming her position as one of the top women cricketers worldwide.

Deepti Sharma’s All-Round Skills

Deepti Sharma, who has been a pivotal all-rounder for India, is another key player included in Grade A. Her ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes her a valuable asset to the team. Deepti’s performances in various formats, including One Day Internationals and T20 matches, have demonstrated her versatility and capability to perform under pressure.

Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s Exclusion from Grade B

One of the notable exclusions from the BCCI’s 2024-25 central contract list is left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, who was previously included in Grade B last season. Despite her contributions, Gayakwad failed to secure a spot in the central contracts this year. This decision indicates the high level of competition within the squad, where players must consistently perform at their best to retain their contracts. While Gayakwad has shown moments of brilliance, her exclusion highlights the evolving nature of women’s cricket in India and the pressure on players to stay competitive.

The Importance of Central Contracts for Women Cricketers

The introduction of central contracts for women cricketers is a game-changing step for Indian women’s cricket. It provides financial security, ensures consistent performance recognition, and motivates players to continue improving their skills. Central contracts also provide the necessary infrastructure for these players to focus on their game without having to worry about their financial stability.

The BCCI’s move to provide central contracts for the women’s team aligns with the global trend of investing in women’s cricket. Cricket boards across the world, including Australia, England, and New Zealand, have implemented similar systems to enhance the growth of women’s cricket. The announcement of the BCCI’s central contracts for the 2024-25 season is a historic moment for Indian women’s cricket.
