KKN Gurugram Desk | On April 22, 2025, a deadly terrorist attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam, shook not only the people of Kashmir but also the heart of India’s tourism economy. Known for its pristine beauty and fondly referred to as “Mini Switzerland,” Pahalgam was once teeming with tourists during the summer months. Today, it is eerily silent, its vibrant tourism industry crippled and its local residents struggling for survival.

The attack that killed 26 people didn’t just claim lives—it ripped apart the livelihoods of hundreds of families who depend entirely on tourism. This ground report captures the grim reality on the ground and the cautious optimism locals are clinging to as they hope for revival through the Amarnath Yatra.

Scene of Devastation: Tourism Comes to a Standstill

Once bustling restaurants, souvenir stalls, and tour agencies now present a picture of desolation. Mohan Kumar, a 38-year-old restaurant manager from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, used to be too busy to glance outside. Today, he stands idly beside a vacant table outside Poonam Restaurant, desperately waiting for a tourist.

“We used to have 22 waiters. Now only 14 remain,” he says.

Even local tourists from Kashmir have stopped coming, indicating the deep psychological impact the attack has had. Restaurants are serving only a handful of customers a day—if any.

Voices of Despair from Local Vendors and Entrepreneurs

Just a few meters away, Darshan Ram, an 18-year-old from Rajasthan, sells handmade wooden keychains and toys. A month ago, his family made ₹500–1000 a day. Now, he says:

“It’s been ten days, and we haven’t made a single rupee.”

His dream of a better life in Pahalgam now lies shattered, along with the hopes of hundreds like him.

Hope Amid Crisis: Stories of Resilience

Despite the gloom, many locals continue to clean their shops daily and wait. Nawaz, who runs the Kashmir Arts Emporium in Srinagar, says:

“It’s been three weeks, and I still come every day. Many shops are shut, but hope keeps me going.”

This sentiment is echoed by Asif Burza, owner of Hotel Heevan Pahalgam, who shared that his rang constantly after the attack. Guests’ families were panicking, canceling trips, or seeking assurances of safety.

“This attack didn’t just claim lives—it changed the identity and lifestyle of Pahalgam,” he reflects. “Still, I believe people will return. Pahalgam belongs to everyone.”

The Economic Impact: More Than Just Empty Rooms

The economic repercussions of the attack are vast:

  • Hotel occupancy has dropped to less than 10%.

  • Tour guides, pony operators, and taxi drivers have no work.

  • Local handicrafts and souvenir businesses are on the brink of collapse.

A region that thrives on seasonal tourism now finds itself without its core economic engine. The ripple effects stretch as far as Srinagar, affecting supply chains and ancillary services.

Security Concerns and Tourist Perception

Security has been significantly ramped , with visible police and army patrols across the region. While this has reassured some visitors, many still remain hesitant. A tourist from Chennai, who had planned his trip months ago, shared:

“We knew the risks, but also trusted that there would be security. And there was.”

He noted that while most parks are closed—including Betaab Valley, Sheshnag Lake, Tullian Lake, and Kolahoi Glacier—the Lidder banks still offer some serenity.

Glimmer of Hope: The Amarnath Yatra

Locals are now placing their hopes on the Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3, 2025. A religious pilgrimage of immense significance, the Yatra brings in thousands of visitors each year.

“We’re hoping the Yatra revives Pahalgam,” says hotelier Asif Burza. “Until then, we are just surviving on hope.”

Authorities are also investing in tightened security measures for the pilgrimage, which may help re-establish tourist confidence.

Why This Attack Was So Devastating

What makes this incident especially tragic is its timing and location:

  • April marks the beginning of the peak tourist season.

  • Baisaran is one of Pahalgam’s most popular trekking and picnic spots.

  • The brutality of the attack, targeting civilians, sent shockwaves across India.

The result was mass cancellations of bookings, media frenzy, and a dramatic drop in new inquiries.

Local Government and NGO Response

While the Jammu and Kashmir administration has provided some financial to affected families, long-term economic recovery remains uncertain. Civil society organizations have started:

  • Campaigns to support small businesses

  • Counseling and trauma support for affected families

  • Digital awareness drives to dispel exaggerated fears

However, much more is needed—from government grants to tourism subsidies—to bring Pahalgam back to life.

What Tourists Should Know: Is It Safe to Visit Now?

According to travel agencies and police:

  • Security is fully operational in and around Pahalgam.

  • Army convoys escort pilgrims and tourists.

  • Entry to sensitive zones remains restricted, but central areas are accessible.

Those considering a visit are advised to:

  • Check official advisories

  • Stay in registered accommodations

  • Follow local guidelines and movement restrictions

Pahalgam is more than just a tourist destination—it’s a livelihood, a memory, a legacy. For the locals, the attack didn’t just bring terror, it brought economic devastation and emotional exhaustion.

But as the Amarnath Yatra approaches and a few brave travelers trickle back, hope lingers. As Nawaz puts it:
